Danube Delta, Dobrogea
Ethical wildlife and bird photography experience in Romania’s wild heart
Silent waters, vivid wings, and wild light.
From the mirror-like canals of the Danube Delta to the sun-baked steppes of Dobrogea, this bird and wildlife photography tour in Romania brings you face to face with the wild side of nature. It’s not just a photo trip – it’s an ethical nature immersion, created for photographers who love silence, patience, and real wildlife encounters.
Two wild worlds. One journey. Endless images.
This immersive 7-day / 6-night wildlife photography tour is crafted for those who want it all: the drama of the wetlands and the vast open landscapes of the steppe, all in one experience.
You’ll spend 4 nights deep in the Danube Delta and 2 nights in Dobrogea, combining boat-based bird photography with steppe, cliffs, and rolling hills – the perfect mix for action, portraits, and storytelling imagery.
Led by Florin Stavarache – local guide, ornithologist, and wildlife photographer, this tour embodies the Just Wildlife Tours philosophy: small groups, low impact, ethical wildlife photography, and authentic experiences far from mass tourism.

Florin Stavarache
Biologist, ornithologist, local guide, and wildlife photographer with over 20 years of experience in the Danube Delta.
Florin doesn’t just lead tours-he curates ethical expeditions. He knows every corner, every species, and the exact moment to pause for observation. He navigates by instinct, not GPS, synced with nature’s rhythm.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival in Bucharest and transfer to the Danube Delta
Meet the group at Bucharest Otopeni Airport (OTP) at 2:00 PM.
We drive to Tulcea, the gateway to the Danube Delta, then continue by boat along rivers and channels to our base near Maliuc/Mila 23 – a traditional water-only village in the heart of the wetlands.
On the way, you already get a first taste of the Delta: fishermen, reedbeds, herons and perhaps your first pelicans gliding low over the water. Check-in, dinner, tour briefing and an overview of the days ahead.
Days 2-4 - Danube Delta: full days of bird & wildlife photography
Three full days (plus an extra morning) dedicated almost entirely to bird and wildlife photography in one of Europe’s richest wetlands – the Danube Delta (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve).
Each day:
- Pre-sunrise departure to be in position when the first light hits the water
- Slow, ethical navigation through channels, lakes and reedbeds, adapting the route in real time
- Return late morning for breakfast and a rest
- Afternoon/evening session starting about 4 hours before sunset
Targets include:
- Pelicans (White & Dalmatian)
- Egrets, herons, ibises, spoonbills
- Kingfishers, terns, gulls, waders
- White-tailed Eagles and other raptors
- Otters, wild boars, roe deer, muskrats, raccoon dogs (with luck)
After dinner, optional image review and discussion – settings, composition, fieldcraft – in a relaxed atmosphere.
Day 5 - Last Delta session and transfer to Tulcea, evening photo session in Dobrogea
We enjoy a last morning photo session in the Danube Delta, often in beautiful soft light on the way back to Tulcea.
Around midday, we arrive in Tulcea, check in at our accommodation and take a short break.
In the afternoon, we head out for our first Dobrogea session: steppes, hills or cliffs depending on conditions and recent sightings. Evening light on rollers, bee-eaters and shrikes can be spectacular.
Dinner and overnight in Tulcea.
Day 6 - Dobrogea steppe & hills: colours, raptors and mammals
A full day devoted to Dobrogea’s open landscapes.
Typical structure:
- Early morning departure to a Bee-eater/Roller colony or another key site (departure time decided the evening before)
- Midday return for breakfast, rest and time to work on images
- Afternoon/evening session focusing on raptors, shrikes, wheatears, sousliks and other subjects in golden light
When behaviour is calm, and perches are stable, we may use small ‘doghouse’ blinds for more intimate portraits, always respecting distance.
Typical species photographed:
- Lesser Grey Shrike
- Golden Oriole
- Booted Eagle
- European Roller
- Bee-eater
- Isabelline Wheatear
- Red-rumped Swallow
- Souslik
Overnight in Tulcea.
Day 7 - Return to Bucharest, end of tour
After a relaxed breakfast (no sunrise session today), we drive back to Bucharest, arriving at Otopeni Airport around 1:00 PM.
Please book return flights after 3:00 PM.
You leave with memory cards full of images – and, more importantly, with a deeper connection to the Danube Delta, Dobrogea, and their wild inhabitants.
Optional drone photography
During this tour, we visit several areas that look incredible from above: labyrinths of channels, patchwork lakes, reedbeds, dunes, and dry hills. These landscapes of the Danube Delta offer exceptional opportunities for drone photography, especially during sunrise and sunset.
If you fly a drone, you are welcome to bring it. There will be suitable windows for safe and legal flying, away from sensitive species and busy airspace, always respecting ethical guidelines and wildlife behaviour.
Please mention your drone in the booking form so we can advise you on the best moments and locations.
Note: You need a valid European permit to use a drone, but it is easy to obtain if you don’t already have one.
Photographic activities
Every session is planned around subject, background, and light. We keep the pace quiet and flexible, and we return to the strongest locations when conditions are perfect. The goal is a varied portfolio: portraits, flight shots, birds in habitat, occasional mammals, landscapes, and small details that tell the story of this unique corner of Europe.
Danube Delta — Europe’s great wetland
Main subjects
- Dalmatian & White Pelicans
- Squacco, Night, Purple & Grey Herons, Little Bitterns
- Egrets, Pygmy Cormorants, Glossy Ibises, Spoonbills
- Kingfishers, terns, waders
- White-tailed Eagles & other raptors
- With luck: otters, golden jackal, raccoon dogs, muskrat and european mink
Photo approach
- Morning and evening sessions on a custom low-profile photo boat for water-level perspectives
- Opportunities for flight, fishing behaviour, interactions, reflections, and silhouettes at sunrise/sunset
- Optional environmental storytelling: villages, fishermen, canals, reeds, and calm-water reflections
Dobrogea — steppe, cliffs and raptors
Main subjects
- European Rollers and Bee-eaters on colourful perches
- Lesser Grey Shrikes, Isabelline Wheatears, Golden Orioles
- Booted Eagles, Long-legged Buzzards and other raptors
- Sousliks and other steppe mammals
Photo approach
- Steppe hillside sessions focused on light, patterns, and open-sky behaviour
- Ethical mobile hide sessions where appropriate (always placed responsibly, avoiding nesting disturbance and stress)
- Raptors and passerines in classic Dobrogea habitats: steppe, hills, and coastal edges
We move quietly, engine off whenever possible — keeping the Delta peaceful and the bird photography ethical. We may use mobile “doghouse” blinds or small hides where appropriate, always ethically and with the birds’ comfort as the first priority.
The goal is to build a varied portfolio: portraits, flight shots, birds in habitat, mammals, landscapes, and details that tell the story of this unique corner of Europe — a true Danube Delta wildlife photography experience.

Learn more about your experience
You’ll work around the only thing that truly matters in wildlife photography: the right moment. We chase light, not kilometres. We watch behaviour, not checklists. In the Delta, the day begins before sunrise—when the water turns to glass, and the first wings cut the mist. In Dobrogea, we trade reeds for open horizons, where the steppe sings, and raptors ride thermals.
Between sessions, there’s time to rest, review images, and refine technique. Florin will help with exposure, focus settings, composition, field ethics, and reading animal behaviour—so you come home with stronger images and better instincts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What time should my flights arrive and depart?
Please plan to arrive before 2:00 PM on Day 1.
On Day 7, we reach Bucharest Otopeni Airport (OTP) around 1:00 PM, so please book return flights after 3:00 PM.
Where do we meet, and where does the tour end?
Start and end are at Bucharest Otopeni Airport (OTP).
The tour starts at 2:00 PM on Day 1 and ends around 1:00 PM on Day 7.
Can the itinerary run in reverse (Dobrogea first)?
Yes, occasionally. Depending on weather, logistics, and wildlife conditions, we may run the route in reverse (Dobrogea first, then the Danube Delta).
How difficult is the tour?
Easy to moderate. There are no demanding hikes, but early mornings are part of the experience, and we spend extended time outdoors (wind, sun, or light rain).
Is this tour suitable for birdwatchers or only photographers?
It’s primarily a photography tour, but birdwatchers are welcome. The pace is slower than a classic birding tour because we prioritize light, angles, and behaviour.
What clothing should I pack?
May to early July is typically warm to hot (often 27–33°C during the day).
Bring layers for cool pre-dawn starts, plus sun protection for Dobrogea and a windproof jacket for fast boat rides in the Delta. Insect repellent is recommended.
How big are the groups?
Places are limited to 6 photographers per departure to keep space on the boat and maximize flexibility.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We adapt the plan. The Delta offers sheltered channels, and Dobrogea has multiple alternative locations. We adjust timing and routes to keep the best possible light and conditions.
Is this tour for me?
This tour is ideal if you enjoy quiet, early starts and ethical wildlife photography. It may not be the right fit if you want noisy boat rides, dislike early mornings, expect luxury beyond local authenticity, or prefer a fast “tick-the-list” itinerary.
Can I rent equipment during the tour?
Yes. We have a small selection of Canon-compatible gear available for rent during the tour, subject to availability. Please request it in advance so we can reserve it.
Can I rent camera gear for this tour?
Yes. In addition to our in-house Canon gear, we can often arrange rentals through our partners (Canon Romania, Nikon Romania, Sony Romania). Availability depends on your requested model and dates, so please ask when you book.
